The Problem: Where's the Beautiful Pregnancy Glow I Expected?

Hormonal fluctuations during and post pregnancy cause imbalances in the skin that range from irritations and redness to full scale blemishes. Obstetricians and dermatologists indicate breakouts and skin patchiness are the second chief complaints among pregnant women and the "Pregnancy Glow" is more fallacy than reality. Many commonly used treatment ingredients such as Benzyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acids, as well as most anti-aging products, are contraindicated for use during pregnancy.

Dr. Gerstner explains: "High levels of androgen hormones prompt sebaceous glands in your skin to become larger while the production of sebum in these glands increases. Both can cause skin to look and feel greasy with clogged pores becoming a breeding ground for bacteria. This can often lead to acne and inflammation during and after pregnancy."

Nearly 50% of pregnant women also experience Melasma, dark splotchy spots that appear on the face caused by increased pigmentation. Melasma is caused by elevated estrogen, progesterone, and melanocyte stimulating hormone levels. Gentle skin turnover can improve the appearance of skin and reduce the number and shade of these spots.

Dr. Gerstner's Tips:

"Gentle facials at home can help with this common and frustrating problem. A cleanser which exfoliates will help un-plug pores. Start by wetting face with a warm wash cloth that has a few drops of basq Lavender Pear Aromatherapy. Follow with a gentle exfoliation of the face and neck with Basq's Rebalancing Facial Cleanser. The Oak Root's natural tannins act as an astringent to tone and clarify while the Ylang Ylang treats unevenness and redness. This exfoliant is also great for sensitive skin because the uniform micro beads gently promote skin turnover and renewal. Make sure to apply cleanser to wet face and rinse thoroughly.

I love this cleanser because it is extremely rich in emollients and won't dry skin. It is a favorite amongst today's top models. For women who may be using an anti-aging products before becoming pregnant this is great way to continue to promote celluar turnover in a safe way. Remember to avoid tretinoin (retin-a) Topical tretinion (retin-a) as they could be dangerous to an unborn child."

Keep in mind that sun exposure (any UVA/UVB) may exacerbate melasma or allow it to remain after pregnancy. Thus, one needs a good sunscreen too. The cleanser microbeads will help exfoliate and diminish the brown discoloration but then must be followed with a sunscreen which is oil-free."
